University of Montevallo
Students from around the world
have studied at the University of Montevallo since its founding in 1896. The
University began as Alabama's women's school with twelve students and a vision
for the future. Today, the University enrolls more than 3,200 men and women
within the four colleges of Arts & Sciences, Business, Education, and Fine
Arts. Still small enough to provide each student with the benefits of
one-on-one relationships with faculty, Montevallo is also large enough to offer
a diverse academic cirriculum.
Montevallo offers a wide range of programs within the liberal arts, preparing
students through a core curriculum designed to develop critical thinking
skills. Students benefit regardless of the careers or vocations they choose to
pursue. Emphasized are analytical skills such as those used in Foundations of
Writing, a course within the general education requirement for all students.
Located south of Birmingham in the town of Montevallo, the University offers a
friendly collegiate community that is accessible to students. The 160-acre
campus with its grassy quadrants and massive oaks, includes 45 buildings, many
of which are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and brick
sidewalks and streets that have become recognizable symbols of the University.
